The Beginning of the History

People first discovered natural gas more than 2 thousand years ago. The gas, leaking out of the ground, often caught fire during lightings in different parts of the world. A human could not find any explanation why the earth and air were blazing with fire and attributed this phenomenon to the divine intervention. Fire procured light and warmth and protected humans from wild animals. This was how the cult of fire was born. The cult of fire evolved in India, China, Persia, Caucasus and other parts of the world.

Museum of Historical Development of the Gas Facilities of Moscow city

The museum of historical development of the gas facilities of Moscow city was opened in 1995, when the country celebrated 50th anniversary of Victory over German fascism.

The purpose of establishing the museum was to develop theoretical, practical and professional knowledge of the SUE “MOSGAZ” employees.

The museum was organized and managed by the veteran of the gas facilities and the former director of the “MOSGAZ” Trust legendary Mr. S. Varfolomeev. Significant contribution to the museum development was made by the administration of the former Moscow Gas Plant, “MOSGAZNIIproekt” Institute, “MOSGAZtechsnab” Trust, JV “Mosparteplogaz”, CJSC “Rusproisgaz” and other similar organizations.

The museum has more than one thousand exhibits, which illustrate all historical stages of the gas facilities development of Moscow city, its past, present and future.

All exhibits have a very significant historical value necessary for education of younger generation of gas workers and succession of the greatest traditions of MOSGAZ.

The Museum brought together collections of authentic devices, equipment, locking devices, meters, regulators, gas burners of various applications and other materials and products that were applied at various stages of the gas facilities development and previously manufactured on the gas plant, such as “Iskra” and “Gazoapparat” plants or in the artisan workshops, as well as modern equipment, including equipment produced by foreign manufacturers.

The largest section of the Museum is devoted to the first Moscow Gas Plant which contains miniature buildings and facilities, equipment, gas network elements, production technology of lighting gas, gas lighting, all types of gas lanterns and burners. There is also a section called “Pipelines Corrosion Prevention –active and passive prevention, improvement options”. Interesting section is devoted to the social life of employees, concerning their work, sports, leisure, employees of the gas facilities, their awards, etc.

The Museum comprises such visual aids as schemes, diagrams, albums, historical books written by leading figures of the gas industry, i.e. Yuly Belodvorsky, Alexander Gorduhin and Nikolay Shamardin.
